Downtown Westport's Newest Openings Run on Daylight Hours

"There's still plenty of great fall weather left. And next spring, this will really be exciting." That was 06880's caption on October 5 for a wooden dock that now runs from Arezzo's patio into the Saugatuck River. The same split runs through most of what is new in Westport this October. The newest places either close by mid-afternoon or are waiting for warmer weather. If you plan a late October or November day around what just opened, start early.

A Dock Finished in October and Built for Spring

The dock sits just south of the Ruth Steinkraus Cohen Bridge, on the west bank of the river. 06880 called it Westport's first public dock. In late September the blog photographed a barge heading upriver with Arezzo as "its destination," and reported that the restaurant had recently received approval to build Westport's first public access dock. By October 9 the photos were captioned "ready for action."

The idea dates back more than a year. In June 2025, 06880 reported that Arezzo's owners had applied to the state Department of Energy & Environmental Protection for a 56-foot dock at the north end of the patio. Under that application, boaters could tie up and step ashore to eat, two slips would be open to members of the public who are not dining, and a tour boat might take diners up the river. LandTech, the project's planners and engineers, described a two-pile structure tied into an existing seawall and expected construction to happen in winter once permits were granted.

Those were the application terms. Opening dates, slip rules and any seasonal schedule for the finished dock had not been announced as of mid-October. The first new public place on downtown's river frontage is finished, but its working season is spring, and 06880's caption expects the same.

hi'Amba Opened With Bakery Hours

The biggest restaurant opening of the season follows the same daytime pattern. Bill Taibe opened hi'Amba at 33 Jesup Road on Wednesday, October 14, in the space Basso left. Basso announced December 18, 2025, as its last day after nearly 19 years. According to 06880, the soft opening on Friday, October 9 was "packed all day," with customers going for the ground-floor bakery and for dips, salads, shawarma and skewers served indoors and out.

The posted schedule shows a daytime place first.

Day What hi'Amba's site lists
Monday and Tuesday Closed
Wednesday to Sunday, from 8 a.m. Pastries and morning drinks
Wednesday to Sunday, 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Savory food and drinks
Evenings "Dinner coming soon"

CT Insider reported that dinner service starting at 4 p.m. was still forthcoming the day before opening. The paper listed planned evening dishes including harissa roast chicken with bread salad, makanek sausage in chard, dry-aged duck kebab with cherry amba and wood-roasted fish. Until those dishes arrive, hi'Amba is a morning and lunch address. CTbites describes the daytime menu: Jerusalem bagels, oven-baked pita, Lebanese man'oushe, shakshuka, muhammara, hindbeh, and swordfish shawarma and lamb kebab sandwiches. It also describes the plan for the building, with a working bakery, counter café and grab-and-go market downstairs and full-service dining upstairs. Karen Nicolas is executive chef and Michael Finehirsh is pastry chef.

The drinks menu suits the hours too. CT Insider lists Arabic iced coffee with cardamom and orange blossom foam, along with sharbat. Taibe has opened restaurants in town for a long time. CT Insider traces the history from LeFarm in 2009 to Kawa Ni in 2014, and notes that Kawa Ni's Denver location made the Michelin Guide's recommended list in 2024. This time, his newest Westport room opens with an 8 a.m. pastry case, and its dinner menu is still marked "coming soon."

Main Street's Next Arrival Is Also a Morning Counter

The next storefront lined up for Main Street fits the same pattern. Pop-Up Bagels, the company Westport's Adam Goldberg founded, has signed a lease at 178 Main Street, the former Cold Fusion Gelato space, and expects to open in early 2027, according to the Westport Journal. Both a gelato shop and a bagel counter fit an afternoon walk, but bagels belong to the morning. A brand that began in Westport is coming back to the center of town to serve breakfast.

Put together, the downtown changes of the past few weeks point one way. hi'Amba serves a Jerusalem bagel at 8 a.m. on Jesup Road. A bagel counter is planned for Main Street. The river has a new dock whose first full season is still months away.

On the Post Road, a Move Rather Than an Opening

Not every October change is new to Westport. After 20 years at 582 Post Road East, Stitch Haven is moving about two miles to 420 Post Road West, across from Whole Foods, 06880 reported. The shop has had three names over that time: Knitting Central, then Westport Yarns, and Stitch Haven under Beth Berkowitz since 2025. Moving day was October 19, with the shop planned to reopen October 21 and a grand opening set for Friday, October 30. Class information is on Stitch Haven's site.

The move matters because Westport's newer additions mostly fill daylight hours, and longtime businesses like this one keep their customers through the change.

The Evenings Still Come From Westport's Stages

New places hold the mornings. The calendar for late October and November shows who holds the evenings.

Sat., Nov. 14 Free Family Fun Day 10 a.m. to noon, MoCA/CT
Sat., Nov. 14 Heida Hermanns International Music Competition final round 4 to 8 p.m., MoCA/CT

All of these come from the Celebrate Westport community calendar. Every event that starts after dark is run by an institution Westport has had for years: the Westport Country Playhouse, the Inn at Longshore, MoCA/CT on Newtown Turnpike and the Westport Museum for History & Culture. The Playhouse's Napoleon-at-Pemberley sequel, an imagined continuation of Austen in which Napoleon Bonaparte shows up as a houseguest, is the season's main evening event, and its run ends November 7.

CraftWestport is the largest daytime event. It brings more than 175 contemporary craftspeople and makers to Staples High School for what the listing calls Connecticut's largest indoor fine crafts festival. Admission is $13, $11 for seniors 65 and over, $5 for ages 12 to 18, and free for children under 12. Details are at Artrider's CraftWestport page.

One Saturday That Uses the Whole Day

Saturday, November 7 is the one date that brings both halves together. hi'Amba is open, CraftWestport is in its first day, and the Playhouse run reaches its final date.

  1. 8 a.m. on Jesup Road. hi'Amba's pastries and morning drinks start at 8, with savory food from 9.
  2. 10 a.m. at Staples. CraftWestport opens at 70 North Avenue and runs until 5.
  3. Back downtown before 3. hi'Amba's savory menu runs until 3 p.m., which leaves time for a late lunch.
  4. A look at the river. The new dock just south of the Ruth Steinkraus Cohen Bridge is a short walk across downtown, and the next stretch of good weather will show what it was built for.
  5. Evening at the Playhouse. November 7 is the last listed date of the "Napoleon at Pemberley" premiere. Check showtimes with the Westport Country Playhouse.

The new places come first and the established stage comes last, and hi'Amba's dinner service, once it starts, is the change most likely to shift that order.
